SOME BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE: THIS BRAND IS FOUNDED BY SHAWN STÜSSY, A SURFER WHO USED TO SHAPE HIS OWN BOARDS FOR FRIENDS AND LOCALS IN LAGUNA BEACH, CALIFORNIA. STÜSSY BEGAN SCREENING T-SHIRTS AND SHORTS TO SELL ALONG WITH THE SURFBOARDS AS A FORM OF PROMOTION; HIS SURNAME WRITTEN IN A GRAFFITI-INFLUENCED HAND STYLE WAS TO BECOME THE COMPANY LOGO.

 

IN THIS POSTER, THERE IS A COASTLINE EXTENDED FROM THE BACKGROUND TO THE FOREGROUND WHICH REPRESENTS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF STUSSY: SURFING. ALSO, WE CAN TELL THERE IS A GRAFFITI HAND-STYLE LETTER S PRINTED ON THE BEACH, WHICH REINFORCED THAT THIS POSTER IS FROM THAT BRAND, AND SHOWS OFF THEIR IDENTICAL LETTERING STYLE. OR MAYBE IT INFORMS PEOPLE THAT LETTERING WILL BE A BIG THING IN THAT COLLECTION.

WELL YEAH, HE IS A COOL ARTIST, BUT I AM NOT VERY INTO PAINTING STUFF, SO I AIN'T GONNA TALK ABOUT HIS WORK. THE VERY ESSENCE OF MAKING ARTWORK AS AN ARTIST IS A WAY TO REFLECT THE ARTIST’S THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS. WHEN AN ARTIST CREATES A PIECE OF ART, THEY ARE NOT JUST PUTTING COLORS ON A CANVAS OR SHAPING CLAY.
